I need some IT Career advice…?
I’m currently in school for an Information Technology Diploma and I’m not sure what to choose as a major for the next 3 semesters. I’m trying to find a balance in having a practical decision and pursuing something that I will have a lasting passion for. I already know I want to work in the Technology / Computer field.
I’m currently listed as a Networking Systems Major but I’m also drawn to the Software Development major. Which side is a better start for a long term career in IT. I know that IT is a life-time commitment to learning as technology is always changing and we have to keep up with it (learn/train). Generally web development and to some degree all software development has turned into a commodity with less pay and more outsourcing and off-shoring.
Personally, for me, I would stick with Networking. However, I would try to take some programming courses to see if you like that field. The type of mindset that it takes to be a successful programmer is different than for networking. All the courses in the world won’t make you succeed at programming if you have no gifting for it.
Many Network people, like myself, use scripting to perform networking functions so we combine programming and Networking in our jobs.
Also, as you have mentioned, you are going to need to be flexible as the IT field or your career goals change.
