computer software development industry
Double Major in Electrical and Computer Engineering(ECE) and Computer Science?
I was thinking about doing a double major in Electrical and Computer Engineering(it’s 1 major here) and Computer Science. This is mainly due to my interest in programming and such along with electricity and hardware. Is such a double major good?
I basically like Computer Science because I like video games and would like to try out a job some time in the gaming industry or in development of important software in important companies(i.e Microsoft, Apple…).
However my original plan was to do ECE but now I really am interested a lot in both.
So what do you think about my plans?
I do not think this is a good idea.
1. Not enough time to do both. Engineering is demanding. You have to take a lot of classes. In both ECE and CS, you will be assigned intense semester long projects in your upper level courses. You may not have enough time to focus on all those projects.
2. Your degree is not the end all, be all of what career you will eventually get. A background in ECE is at least enough to get you in the door in a video game company and vice versa. Not everyone who designs video games earned a degree in computer science. Some studied engineering, physics, math, etc.
3. ECE involves quite a bit of programming. The ECE majors at my school take about 75% of the courses that the CS majors take, as well as a ton of engineering and math courses. As an ECE major, you will gain significant programming experience.
4. There are other ways outside of the classroom to learn about a field. Get a job or internship. Do an independent study project. Don’t assume that because you pick one major you’ll be completely cut off from the other.
